The Meaning of Meaning

I don’t know how to start. I’m adding a few more bytes to the Internet. We humans have come a long way since the early hard drives of the 80s to the 1 million exabytes stored on the Internet at large. There are 4.4 million blog posts made per day. What makes anyone think that adding another post will make any difference?

What Is Purpose?

I like to start with a definition. It grounds me and fills me with purpose.

  • the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.
  • an intended or desired result; end; aim; goal.
  • determination; resoluteness.

It’s the point of it all. It’s why we wake up in the morning. One person’s purpose is another person’s inanity. Most days are made up of convincing people that your purpose is worth investing in. Is what’s important to you important to your friends and family? More importantly, is it important to strangers? Does it matter?

It does matter.

It must matter like a plant reaching for sun and water. If you are reading this, you are alive, and that is enough purpose by itself.

The Purpose Forge

Inside you and between your thoughts lies profound purpose. As you chip away, all the things that don’t matter, a vision of your purpose comes into focus. What are the things that imbue meaning into your reality?

Athletes are driven by purpose. The best athletes set goals and work them to completion. In sport, your purpose is clearly defined by the rules of the game. In life, when looking at the big picture, the rules aren’t so clear.

Defining your principles and values is a great way to start forging. By defining what’s important to you, the parameters of your game have been set. By drawing a line in the sand and prioritizing your adherence to the principle of health education, you have started forging your purpose.

Ups & Downs

Many people experience depression. In the least, we humans do have bad days. What do we do when we are stuck in a valley? My favorite thing to do is to put one foot in front of the other. I jump headfirst into exercise after taking some time to relax.

It’s so easy to say that it’s something else to make it happen. Ground yourself in your purpose and return to your principles if you aren’t feeling like your focus is making an impact reassess your goals.
